Spaying or Neutering: Spaying (female- ovariohysterectomy) or neutering (male- castration) your pet is one of the most kind, and responsible things you can do for your pet.  Millions of homeless animals are killed each hear in animal shelters due to overpopulation.  In addition to helping this problem, you are also helping to assure your pet will be free of some very avoidable and possibly life-threatening illnesses such as mammary or uterine cancer, and testicular or prostate cancer.  BACK TO TOP

Flea, Tick, and Other Parasite Control:  Fleas can cause serious health problems for your pets including flea allergy dermatitis and flea anemia.  Fleas also act as hosts to the tapeworm, which is an intestinal worm transmitted to pets when they chew at and swallow fleas.  A flea-infested dog or cat can introduce hundreds of new flea eggs into the home each day.  Ticks, which are not as common as fleas but still a health risk, can carry such conditions as Lyme disease.   We have topical and oral treatments available.  BACK TO TOP

Heartworm Disease: Dogs are considered the definitive host for
heartworms (Dirofilaria immitis). However,
heartworms may infect more than 30 species of
animals, including cats! When a mosquito carrying
infective heartworm larvae bites a pet and transmits
the infection, the larvae grow, develop, and migrate
in the body over a period of several months to
become sexually mature male and female worms. These
reside in the heart, lungs, and associated blood
vessels. Even as immature adults, the worms mate and
the females release their offspring (microfilariae),
pronounced: (micro fil ar ee), into the blood
stream. The time elapsed from when the larvae enter
the dog until the minute offspring can be detected
in the blood (pre-patent period) is about six to
seven months. The male heartworms (four to six
inches in length) and the females (10-12 inches)
become fully grown about one year after infection,
and their life span in dogs appears to be at least
five to seven years. Both dogs and cats should be on a monthly heartworm preventive.

Surgery: Surgery is an integral part of our practice, and is performed using the same aseptic conditions that exist in a human hospital.  We perform most soft tissue surgeries, as well as some orthopedic (bone) surgeries.  We use only safe, modern anesthetic protocols to assure your pet's safety.  We require and perform blood chemistry profiles on all animals prior to surgery, to help rule out potential problems that could cause difficulties with anesthesia.  Every patient is closely monitored to ensure the safest and most comfortable care and outcome.

Dental Care: Periodontal (teeth and gum) disease is the most often diagnosed health problem for small animals today.  Gum disease can cause your pet discomfort, tooth loss and decay, and oral bacterial infections.   The bacteria can enter your pet's system and bloodstream, and affect vital organs such as the heart, liver, and kidneys.  It is also the main cause of halitosis ("bad breath") in pets.  For more info on dental care, click here.      BACK TO TOP

Annual Health Check-ups and Vaccinations: Annual physical examinations are as important for pets as they are for humans.  They are an integral part of the good health maintenance for your pets.  Complete exams include a comprehensive medical history and physical, and laboratory testing where indicated.  Many conditions can be better managed or even eliminated when detected early enough.   Annual vaccinations ("shots") are also important for the health and well-being of your pet; what is needed varies from pet to pet. For more info on vaccinations, click here.  BACK TO TOP

Diagnostics and Laboratory Testing:  We offer in-house laboratory testing to provide reliable, rapid information for diagnosing pet health problems.  We can perform blood counts, blood chemistry analysis, electrolytes, thyroid testing, as well as urinalyses.  We can do fecal tests to rule out intestinal parasites or infections, as well as blood tests for heartworms.  We also perform radiology (x-rays), as well as ultrasound (sonogram) evaluations.  We also use outside labs for specialized tests.  BACK TO TOP

Anesthesia and Sedation: We use only safe, modern anesthetic protocols to assure your pet's safety.  We require and perform blood chemistry profiles on all animals prior to surgery, to help rule out potential problems that could cause difficulties with anesthesia.  Every patient is closely monitored to ensure the safest and most comfortable care and outcome.  BACK TO TOP
